Any watchers? thoughts?
Just saw it and must say I really enjoyed it. I was worried going in...(spoiler)...I wasn't sure how I'd like the whole lesbian sleeping with a guy thing. But it really was about so much more than that and so well done. The cheating wasn't about another lesbian that just wants d*ck. It was crystal clear that the cheating was a consequence of the marriage not a consequence of needing or wanting a man.
it was so refreshing to see such interesting, complex characters that happened to be part of a family where the parents are gay. the writing and directing and acting were spot on. Annette Bening was a joy to watch. During that dinner scene at his house? The close ups of her face were magical--so real and so raw. So good. What a wonderful story about family. period.
I was kinda annoyed at all the straight sex scenes and only one lame gay sex scene...I mean I get it...the ladies were in a rut so they couldn't be having hot sex all the time but still it was a little annoying.
all in all. i highly recommend. _________________ Future Defense Attorney Theater presents:

I really want to see this movie. I mean, I've seen Eclipse 3 times... I need to get my priorities straight. _________________ I'm doing it again in 2010!

| I want to see it too, but probably won't until August 15th - the next day we'll have a free sitter. |

Yay! My sister works for Focus Features, so she had been getting me excited for this movie for a long time. I was there opening night.. I'm currently wearing a "The Kids Are Alright" tee shirt.
Umm.. yeah. I love it.
P.S. Melody- I don't know where you live, but I love to babysit! (Aka- if you ever come to NY and need a babysitter...) _________________ You're a lion who thinks she's a kitten. |

I have to say I was a little disappointed by this film. I enjoyed it, but I just didn't feel that it lived up to the hype for me. The performances were largely fantastic but like... for as fantastic as Annette Benning and Julianne Moore were, with both of them I felt like I saw the ending coming from almost their first scene together. I have an acting teacher who likes to say we should see hints of the ending in the beginning, but you don't want to start the play knowing that Juliet dies (to so speak). I felt as though I knew from five minutes into the film that Juliet dies.
I liked that there wasn't a neat happy ending with the Mark Ruffalo character, but I felt that Annette Benning's speech to him was unnecessary - the ending with the daughter seemed so much more painful to him and was just a more interesting moment.
I don't know. Overall I wanted to like this movie, but it fell a little flat for me... _________________ You know that when the truth is told, you can get what you want or you can just get old. |

I'm not sure how I feel about this movie. People are already stupid when it comes to understanding the difference between a donor and a father. Adding in the affair makes me cringe.
Our daughter is donor conceived and one day we'll have an 18 year old with access to her Donor information. The twist is that we already know the identity of her Donor - we have pictures, know where he lives etc so there won't be many surprises for us. It's just going to be hard keeping that info
confidential until she's legally able to contact him. |

Well I was able to see this movie the other night with Noah - he had no idea what I was taking him too... we both really liked it, though Noah was confused about the time setting because it was current day but people were saying things like groovy and dressing like it was the 1970s. I just said that is how California is!
Anyway, as a couple who have been together for a long time (we're heading into 17 years since we started dating and we had our 10th wedding anniversary a few months ago), we related to a lot of the issues. I thought the actors were all spot on creating dimensional flawed characters. Mark Ruffalo's Paul was especially spot on as guy that I'd like to know, but wouldn't want in my life. _________________ I'm doing it again in 2010!

I saw this tonight with some friends and absolutely loved it. I thought it was really warm, funny, and smart. I'm a huge fan of Julianne Moore and she was phenomenal, as was Annette Benning.
I feel like it will be this year's prerequesite Indie Underdog Candidate at the Oscars, like Little Miss Sunshine or Juno. And that pleases me! |
